Comparative Legislation on Older Persons in Central America and the Dominican Republic



This report has been elaborated by the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Center (CELADE)-Population Division of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), at the request of the Forum of the Presidents of Legislative Powers of Central America and the Caribbean Basin (FOPREL) and the Population, Development and Municipalities Commission of the Nicaraguan Legislative Assembly, with the aim of serving as background for the development of works in the I Interparliamentary Encounter on Older Personas as Rights-Holders, to take place on 9 September 2011 in Managua, Nicaragua.

As a result of this meeting, the parliamentarians of the Inter-parliamentary Commission on Social Cohesion and the Fight against Poverty of FOPREL adopted the resolution on the legislative harmonization on the issue of older persons in which they agree to proceed with the design and creation of a proposal for a regional framework law on the issue of older persons, to be submitted for consideration to the Member Presidents of FOPREL, with the purpose of serving as a reference for the harmonization, modernization, and approval of the pertinent national legislations.
