WTO to organize seminar on exchange rates and trade

WTO:2011 NEWS ITEMS.25 November 2011. The Working Group on Trade, Debt and Finance will organize in Geneva a seminar at the end of the first quarter of 2012 on the economics of the relationship between exchange rates and trade – especially the impact of the one on the other, said Working Group Chair Martin Glass of Hong Kong, China. He said that the issue of existing WTO rules and currencies will not be taken up at this seminar.

The two-day seminar will have four sessions dealing with the different dimensions of the topic, with participation from the private sector, governments, international agencies and academia.

This seminar follows on the heels of a WTO Secretariat report issued on 27 September 2011 which examines existing literature on the relationship between exchange rates (including the effects of both volatility and misalignment) and international trade. Members of the Working Group said speakers invited to participate at the seminar should provide comprehensive coverage of the issues, and be representative of different institutions and parts of the world.  Members would like to see companies of different sizes - with particular emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprises - and different industries represented at the seminar. Representatives from companies in both developed and developing countries will be invited to participate.
