In 21st century education, e-learning (education through digital media) has given rise to personalized learning environments (PLE). This is a response to the necessity of lifelong learning, as well as to the challenge of responding to youth that have dropped out of the educational system and face difficulties in their school life. This response is so that they may have opportunities to become reintegrated into the school system and achieve the expected learning outcomes. This methodology allows us to recognize the difference among students, recognizing them as learners and agents of their own learning.
In personalized environments, students can explore and create according to their own interests and directions, interacting with their community and peers. This TC will develop the first phase of assessment, design and preparation, and the second phase (which is the result of another TC) allow the implementation of the methodology defined. The fieldwork of this project will be developed in Chile because of its solid education system and its progressive advances in the field of ICT and education.
The provinces of Llanquihue and Osorno have been selected to carry out the pilot projects; they are in an area far from the capital where there are high percentages of rural populations. The project will be well supported out in the field, considering the location of Llanquihue and Osorno and this will also provide conditions for implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the initiative that can be later applied to similar contexts in other areas of the region.
